How did we get our start?

I’m Dawn LaFontaine, Founder of Cat in the Box. I’m a lifelong animal lover who has always designed things for my own pets when I couldn’t find what I was looking for in the big-box pet stores.

I got the idea for this company after visiting an old friend, who happens to be a cat sitter, and noticed all the empty Amazon boxes cluttering up her living room. I knew cats love cardboard boxes – there’s some pretty serious science that explains why – but it got me thinking. Wouldn’t it be nice – for both cats and guardians – to have fun, attractive, whimsical boxes for play?

What makes our products unique?

Everything we make, we make with cat biology and cat science in mind.

For too long, cat products on the market have been low quality, with little thought given to what cats need to lead interesting, fulfilling lives.

All of our products are designed “cat first.” We think about what indoor cats need to meet their biological drive to hunt, hide, and play.

But we think about cat guardians, too. We understand that cat things become part of the decor of the home. We design attractive, well-made products that you can be proud to display in your home.

I love to make cats happy.

I also love that I get to think “cat” all day long, and connect with other cat lovers, just like me.

But one of the greatest joys of this job has been the opportunity to help the cats and kittens who need it the most. Through this business, I’ve been able to provide support to cat shelters by donating product and mostly importantly, by fostering.

There is no greater delight than being the one to help kittens grow into the cats they were meant to be.
